Selecting an automation platform looks straightforward during a demonstration. Every vendor can automate an invoice, update a system and show an AI agent completing a task.
The real differences emerge after deployment: when hundreds of automations must be governed, applications change, exceptions increase and business teams expect measurable outcomes.
Automation Anywhere, UiPath and Microsoft Power Automate are all credible enterprise platforms. However, they approach automation from different starting points.
This is a research-led assessment based on vendor documentation reviewed on September 11, 2026—not a hands-on benchmark. Platform-fit recommendations are editorial judgments; capabilities and pricing are vendor-described and depend on the purchased edition.

UiPath: a broad strategic automation platform
UiPath’s advantage is breadth. Its platform combines RPA, API workflows, process and task mining, intelligent document processing, application testing, AI agents and central governance.
UiPath Maestro extends the proposition beyond individual bots. It uses BPMN to coordinate robots, AI agents, systems and people across an end-to-end process. The same process model can include rules, human decisions, exception handling and SLA monitoring.
This makes UiPath particularly relevant where automation must cross SAP, mainframes, web applications, virtual desktops and internally developed systems. It also supports cloud and on-premises deployment options, which can matter in regulated environments.
The trade-off is complexity. A broad platform requires specialised skills, architecture standards and a strong operating model. UiPath’s Standard and Enterprise pricing is quotation-based, and capabilities such as process intelligence, advanced governance and self-healing automation can increase the overall commercial footprint.
Select UiPath when automation is a strategic enterprise capability—not simply a collection of departmental workflows.
Power Automate: strongest inside a Microsoft-first enterprise
Power Automate’s biggest advantage is proximity. It already sits close to Teams, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Dynamics 365, Power Apps, Power BI and Azure.
Microsoft says the platform offers more than 1,400 certified connectors, alongside cloud flows, desktop RPA, approvals, process mining and hosted bots. Business users can create relatively simple automations without becoming professional RPA developers.
Its public entry pricing is also clearer than its competitors. Microsoft’s US pricing page lists Power Automate Premium at $15 per user per month, Process at $150 per bot per month and Hosted Process at $215 per bot per month, paid yearly. Regional pricing, taxes and enterprise agreements may differ.
However, the low starting price should not be confused with total enterprise cost. Required licences and capacity for premium connectors, Dataverse, unattended bots, managed environments and Copilot usage must be assessed together. The separately listed $5,000-per-tenant monthly Process Mining add-on can materially change the business case.
Power Automate is a cloud service. It can connect to on-premises systems through a gateway, but organisations requiring a fully self-hosted automation control plane may find UiPath more flexible.
Select Power Automate when Microsoft is already the organisation’s digital workplace and most opportunities involve cloud workflows, approvals and employee productivity.
Automation Anywhere: focused on cloud and agentic operations
Automation Anywhere has repositioned its platform around agentic process automation. Its current proposition combines AI agents, traditional bots, APIs, documents and people through Mozart Orchestrator.
Its capabilities include AI Agent Studio, Document Automation, Process Discovery, Automation Co-Pilot and centrally managed RPA. The company also says agentic execution can be deployed in a customer-controlled virtual private cloud.
This positioning is relevant to document-heavy and exception-heavy operations such as accounts payable, customer service, HR and IT service management. Automation Anywhere may appeal to organisations that want a specialised automation platform focused on these operational priorities.
The caution is that many performance figures published by Automation Anywhere are vendor claims or selected customer results. Buyers should validate document accuracy, exception rates, agent reliability and the cost of orchestration using their own processes. Enterprise pricing also requires direct commercial evaluation.
Select Automation Anywhere when cloud-led RPA, document automation and agent-assisted shared services form the centre of the business case.
Which platform should an enterprise select?
My assessment is:
- Choose UiPath for complex, cross-platform automation at enterprise scale.
- Choose Power Automate for a Microsoft-first environment and widespread low-code adoption.
- Choose Automation Anywhere for cloud-oriented, document-heavy and agentic operational automation.
A hybrid model can also work. Power Automate may support employee workflows while UiPath or Automation Anywhere handles complex unattended operations. But using multiple platforms without clear boundaries creates duplicate licences, fragmented governance and competing support teams.
Before selecting, test the same five production-like processes on each shortlisted platform. Measure development effort, exception handling, resilience after application changes, operating cost, governance effort and business-user adoption.
The winning platform is not the one that builds the most impressive demonstration. It is the one the organisation can operate reliably three years after implementation.
